Starting your journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai is exciting, especially in a Boston Jiu Jitsu gym, where community and quality instruction are top priorities. Whether you're stepping onto the mats for your first BJJ roll or gearing up for Muay Thai pad work, coming prepared can make a big difference. Here are five essential items every beginner should bring to their first class to ensure a smooth, productive experience.
Comfortable Training Gear: For your first Boston Jiu Jitsu class, wear athletic clothes that fit snugly but allow full movement. If it's a gi class, check to see any loaner gi's are available for first-timers. For Muay Thai, a t-shirt and shorts are usually fine to start. Avoid zippers or metal, as they can be dangerous during training. Breathable fabric goes a long way in keeping you comfortable during hard work.

2. Water Bottle & Towel: Hydration is key in both Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu. Classes can be intense, and having a water bottle nearby (and some high quality salts as well) helps you stay sharp and energized. A small towel can also come in handy to wipe off sweat between rounds or after class—especially during Boston’s humid summer training days, as sometimes...we don't like to use the AC. Being clean and prepared shows respect for your training partners and the gym.
3. Positive Attitude, Mouthguard, and Flip-Flops: with Boston Jiu Jitsu, we value teamwork, humility, and consistency. Show up with a positive mindset, ready to learn and listen. On a practical note, bring a mouthguard for safety during sparring and flip-flops to wear off the mat to help keep the training area clean. A little attention to hygiene and attitude goes a long way in becoming part of the team.

Your first day with Boston Jiu Jitsu is about more than just gear—it's about showing up ready to grow, sweat, and push yourself. The right mindset and preparation set the tone for your martial arts journey, whether you’re throwing your first kick or hitting your first arm-bar. So pack smart, hydrate well, and get ready to become part of a strong, welcoming community.
